IMPACT 2 by Concordian International School

15/06/2011

This 10th Anniversary edition of IMPACT covers Concordian International School's milestone celebration: the anniversary concert featuring trilingual performances and a Khon Ramayana by Grade 8, the founding-director speech tracing growth from 32 to 540 students, 2011 university acceptances for IB Diploma graduates, the UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassadors Workshop, and student-led community service.

This is the April 2011 issue of IMPACT (volume 1, issue 2), the school magazine of Concordian International School in Bangkok, published as a special 10th Anniversary Edition. The cover features the 32 Concordian Founding Students who have been at the school since its first year, 2001-2002. Notes from the director and principals, including Varnnee Ross, Laurent Goetschmann, and Dr. James Leung, reflect on a decade of growth from 34 students in the first year to more than 500 today, and on Concordian's identity as an IB World School offering all three IB programs, the Primary Years (PYP), Middle Years (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). The edition also previews a campus expansion with new EYP/PYP and Science, Art and Technology buildings.

Much of the issue covers the 10th Anniversary celebrations. The 10th Anniversary Concert on January 28th featured performances in three languages, a Khon masked-dance presentation of the Ramayana by Grade 8 students, and the debut of a new instrumental music program, with the top 25 music students from grades 6-10 performing the King's Anthem. At the 10th Anniversary Dinner Party, an auction of five pieces of student artwork raised nearly 300,000 baht for tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan. The school also planted 150 trees and marked ten-year staff service.

The Diploma Programme section lists 2011 university acceptances (as of 28 March 2011), with students admitted to institutions including University College London, Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Toronto, Chulalongkorn University, and others, several with scholarships. Tresa Virankabutra explains conditional acceptances, and Grade 10 Personal Projects, including Kade's Candyland prom, were exhibited.

Other features cover EYP and PYP classroom inquiries, the PYP and MYP Student Councils (the MYP council raised 54,732 baht for the Chaipattana Foundation through a Free Dress Day), the Concordian Dragons sports culture, the PTA Fun Fair, the UNESCO Youth Peace Ambassadors Workshop hosted on January 21st, flood relief efforts valued at 114,424 baht plus 74,230 baht from a rice sale, and community service at Klong LadKrabang School and the Camillian Home.
